Colleagues: Even though the world is thinking about natural and technological
hazards right now, we have to keep in mind that statistically the seven culturally
and technologically diverse regions of the world will be struck in 2003 (and
2004, and 2005, etc) by numerous technological hazards and by an estimated:
1) 100,000 thunderstorms
2) 10,000-20,000 floods
3) thousands of landslides
4) thousands of wildfires
5) over 100 damaging earthquakes
6, scores of severe windstorms
7) numerous drought episodes
8) several tsunamis.
The cost in terms of deaths, injuries, health care impacts, loss of economic
resources for education, health care, etc will continue to be enormous and
unacceptable in every nation. That is the reason I am attaching the short report
of some of the accomplishments of the the Global Alliance. We can not stop
our work now. The people of the world need what we are trying to do.
Sincerely
Dr. Walter Hays
