Faculty Position in Emergency Management

POSITION TITLE: Assistant/Associate Professor
DEPARTMENT: Sociology/Anthropology
CLOSING DATE: March 24, 2003 or until filled.
DESCRIPTION: North Dakota State University's Department of Sociology/Anthropology (http://www.ndsu.edu/sociology) has a full-time, tenure-track position open in sociology and emergency management. We currently offer a minor in emergency management including four required workshops hosted by the North Dakota Division of Emergency Management. The North Dakota State Board of Higher Education just approved our request to offer a major, a master's degree, and a doctorate in emergency management. Our goal is to provide an interdisciplinary emergency management program that is both scholarly and applied with a firm foundation in sociological theory and methods. The > open position is our first step toward meeting this goal. This is an opportunity to be a key player in the development of one of the first emergency management doctoral programs in the nation.

The Carnegie Foundation classifies NDSU as a Doctoral/Research University-Intensive. NDSU expects faculty members to demonstrate excellence in teaching, research, and service in an open and collaborative environment. Rank and salary based on experience and merit are competitive. The Department of Sociology/Anthropology has 10 faculty, and undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students. NDSU is a Land Grant university.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum qualifications include demonstrated expertise and experience in emergency management and the ability to teach graduate-level courses from a sociological perspective in at least two of the following areas: disaster, preparedness, mitigation (especially hazardous materials mitigation), response, recovery, and/or the professionalization of emergency managers. A Ph.D. is required in one of the following disciplines: sociology, public administration, or urban/regional planning. It is critical that the applicant be able to work in a cooperative and collegial manner with practitioners and agency officials. Must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preferred qualifications include a graduate or undergraduate degree in sociology, teaching and/or research expertise in sociology, and the demonstrated ability to obtain external grants and to manage personnel, programs, and budgets.
