Today, we are hurting on behalf of the people in the town of Chongku Qiake in Bachu County in the Xinjiang Province of Western China, located near the border with Kyrgyzstan, who are trying to recover from the societal disruption caused by a devastating M 6.8 earthquake that struck on Monday morning. We offer our sincere condolences to them in this time of deep need. The following is a brief PRELIMINARY report on the subject earthquake. Please use it to strengthen POLITICAL AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT for your programs and projects and share with colleagues, as appropriate.

This event is another reality check for the GADR. We must continue and accelerate our efforts throughout the world to integrate enhanced political and technical capacity for disaster reduction in our urban development and construction programs. I am requesting colleagues and members of GADR in China and others who have specific information to provide additional information through a short report for the benefit of the GADR and others.
