Major Winter Flooding in Northwestern USA Isolates Millions
(12/01/09)

• Heavy rain pounded the northwest US state of Washington, flooding roads, triggering mudslides, and leaving millions of residents isolated and cut off from the rest of the state and the country.

• Melting of up to 2 meters of snow and ice in some places combined with warm torrential rain combined to leave 20 rivers across the state overflowing banks or close to flood stage.

• An estimated three million people living along Puget Sound, the coastal inlet where Seattle, Washington State's main hub is located, were isolated after road and rail links into the area were severed.
