• Hurricane Gustav spares New Orleans from repeat of Katrina as levees hold.

• Gustav caused extensive damage in Cuba.

• Gustav made landfall at 9:30 am in Cocodrie, Louisiana, about 70 miles southwest of New Orleans.

• A CAT 2 hurricane then, it had winds of about 110 miles per hour (183 km/hr)

• The storm surge was about 14 feet
